On the brink of expiration for the last ten years, this legendary shopping center (where U.S. figure skater and iconic underdog Tonya Harding learned to skate, by the way) currently embodies capitalism turned inside out. Its precarious state means cheap rent, and that means that instead of a Macy’s, a Foot Locker or a Claire’s, there’s a pinball museum, a synthesizer library, a chess club, a roller skating school, a youth arts space, two art galleries, a magic shop—but possibly not for long. The end of Lloyd as we know it is a constant, looming threat, as the developers scramble to make it profitable again. And that makes documenting the half full universe of this half empty mall all the more vital.In 2025, during my artist residency at ILY2 Too Gallery inside Lloyd Center Mall, Planet Lloyd established a video department as well. In response to a neglected intersection in our neighborhood that the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) had repeatedly ignored, artist Nicole Galpern and I formed the Crosswalk Fantasy Committee and initiated a 9 month artistic campaign for a painted crosswalk and traffic signs at Stanhope St and Fairview Ave in Ridgewood, Queens. We organized a rally to garner community support and present this glaring void in the city planning system back to itself. We created our “fantasy intersection” by transforming it into a hospitable, pedestrian-centric site. eight months later, we held a Crosswalk Victory party at the intersection, replete with a ribbon cutting ceremony, a Proclamation of Traffic Safety, a drum solo on the stop sign pole by Kid Millions of Public Dance is a civic agency that frames dance as a public utility through participatory dance happenings in public space. From 2023-2024 in Portland, Oregon, weekly dance happenings took place at various locations inside the perpetually waxing and waning Lloyd Center Mall: the former Hollister, the defunct Champs, the food court, the vacant Marshall’s, and the old Spencer’s. The one hour dances were an open invitation to shoppers and passersby to join the Public Acts of Dance Company, an accessible and expandable troupe of people dancing in public. Public Dance 1 was published as a flip book and sold at Floating World Comics inside Lloyd Center Mall.While regular dance happenings ended in 2024, the Public Acts of Dance Company is always welcoming new members. To join, all you have to do is dance. In the abstraction of infrastructure, I see potential for a softening of rigidity, a conversation between the natural and the built environment, a poetical reenvisioning of how we interface with each other and our surroundings, and a more fluid and functional relationship between people and the cities they live in. The artist Paula Wilson said once in an interview, “the life force of a thing can be completely created by its shadow.” As I navigated bureaucratic procedures with the NYC Department of Transportation through my Crosswalk Fantasy intersection intervention, learned new technical vocabulary to communicate with city officials and traffic engineers, relocated to the transit and city planning hub of Portland, OR to finish grad school, and begun collaborating with a group of 5th grade school crossing guards, the visual language of the street became an orienting guidepost and obsession for me. I am intrigued by the standardized symbols of communication that attempt to organize how we move and coexist in public space, and in doing so, create a shared optical and physical lexicon for us as a civic body.
